My first Page: January 2002
In 20 years of quilting, I have yet to try a Bargello. About 6 years ago I purchased 'Bargello Quilts' by Marge Edie with the intent of making myself a winter coat using the techniques learned in this book. I collected all the fabrics for this project and it is time to dig them out of their safe place and start playing.
In order to effectively portray a Bargello in a 8 1/2" x 11" my design will have to be very small. This is do-able. January was a dark and emotional month for me and the blacks and greys of my original collection fit my mood perfectly. Add a zip of red, orange and yellow. Add beads after.
February 18: I think I finally have the curved line placement of my Bargello where I want it. I can vision what I want but am having a hard time transferring that image to paper. I've selected my fabrics and it's time to get down to business.
Drafted out the design, retraced to create a paper foundation to sew on. Then coloured the draft for fabric placement. Then decided that since many of the strips are only 1/4" wide, the best way to keep the edges straight would be to sew them onto graph paper. The technique works perfect.
Because the red segments vary in length. I've decided to start the strips at the red, then I can add more red extensions before adding the grey and black strips. The lower portion of the bargello remains the same throughout, only the upper portion changes. I am very pleased with the process.
February 19: The top is finished. I'm really happy with my Bargello project. The flash of red/orange/yellow depicts the flashes I've been having as well as a panicle of my life, where everything seems as if it has come to a point of flash. Perhaps the breaking point.
February 20: My January Page is quilted and I love it. I have chosen the beads to put on it. Will the beads enhance or hinder what I have done?
February 26: Started on the binding on 'January'.
