February 23, 2002 Today I'm off to take a class with fellow list member Pat White. The name of this two day course -'Road Rage With Humour' - a lesson in collage. Which for me is so out of my element. No rulers, no straight lines - no rules! As a friend put it 'You! Miss Perfect' - perhaps it's time to loosen up!!!
First step in this process was finding a picture we liked in 30 seconds from a magazine. Then selected the colors used in the picture by percentages. My colors where red, orange, yellow and a little bit of green. Then choose a theme for the piece. Mine of course was 'Spring'. Next step was finding pictures from magazines selecting those with 'the' colors. Create a collage using the pictures. Securing the paper collage, basting, then the playing began. Quilting lines, decorative stitches, thread play, transferring text using fusible webs, the list of possibilities was endless. By Sunday afternoon, my piece resembled more ciaos than spring - reflecting my home life at that moment.
February 25, 2002 My weekend class with Pat White was just what I needed. I relaxed, I played and I learned some new techniques. I had fun. And I love what I created - still need to do some more thread play. Work on adding a few elements to finish saying what I needed to say. Thank you Pat!!!
February 26, 2002 Finished the thread play on 'Children are the Flowers of Life'. Even found my color wheel. Added a foil sun. Put the binding on and have decided to add beads or buttons on for the centres of the flowers. Now my piece portrays the 'Spring' and gardening theme I had originally selected as well, my anchor. My children.
February 27, 2002 Put the buttons on 'Children are the Flowers' - my button collection sure does come in handy. Sent a scan to Pat - here's her response:
"It looks fantastic - I am glad you got it finished and I am also glad that you sent me a pic. I have put it on my webpage and I hope that is okay . My hubbie looked at it and said - oh dear - are you mad - I didn't get what he meant until he mentioned that it was pretty spectacular and I should be jealous that it turned out so well. LOL I am just excited when they make the student happy and don't end up in the trash. Pat White"
